This 20 Minute Honey Garlic Shrimp recipe is a quick and delicious meal featuring succulent shrimp marinated in a sweet and savory honey garlic sauce. Perfectly cooked in a skillet with a touch of olive oil, this dish offers a harmonious blend of flavors from honey, soy sauce, garlic, and optional fresh ginger. It’s ideal for busy weeknights, served over brown rice and steamed vegetables, garnished with fresh green onions for a simple yet satisfying seafood dinner.

Ingredients

Marinade and Sauce

  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (reduced sodium preferred)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced (or 1 teaspoon jarred minced garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger (optional)

Shrimp

  • 1 lb medium uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil

Garnish (optional)

  • Chopped green onion

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, and minced fresh ginger if using. This mixture will be split into two halves—half for marinating the shrimp and half for cooking later.
  2. Marinate the Shrimp: Place the peeled and deveined shrimp into a large sealable container or zipped-top bag. Pour half of the marinade over the shrimp, toss gently to coat, then seal and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or up to 8-12 hours for deeper flavor. Cover and refrigerate the remaining marinade for use in the cooking step.
  3. Cook the Shrimp: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated shrimp in a single layer, discarding any leftover marinade used during marinating. Cook the shrimp on one side until pink, about 45 seconds, then flip them over. Pour the reserved marinade into the skillet and continue cooking for another 1-2 minutes until the shrimp are fully cooked and the sauce is slightly thickened.
  4. Serve: Plate the cooked shrimp with the sauce from the skillet. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired. This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed broccoli and brown rice for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Marinating shrimp for longer (up to 8-12 hours) intensifies flavor, but at least 15 minutes is sufficient for a quick meal.
  • Use reduced sodium soy sauce to keep the dish from becoming too salty.
  • The sauce thickens slightly during cooking, perfect for drizzling over rice or vegetables.
  • Substitute shrimp with other seafood like scallops or firm white fish if desired.
  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari or gluten-free soy sauce instead.
