Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 16 ounces ground beef
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Noodles

  • 12 ounces extra wide egg noodles (or Amish egg noodles)

Sauce

  • 15 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 15 ounces can cream of mushroom soup
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 cup half & half (or whole milk)

Topping

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Prepare a 9 x 13 inch baking dish for assembling the casserole. Place a skillet on medium heat on the stovetop and set a large pot of salted water on high heat to boil the noodles.
  2. Cook Beef and Onions: Add the ground beef and chopped onions to the skillet. Season liberally with salt and pepper. Stir and cook the beef, breaking it into small pieces with a wooden spoon until fully cooked and onions are softened, about 5-8 minutes. Turn off heat.
  3. Cook Noodles: Once the water boils, add the egg noodles and cook according to package instructions, ensuring they are al dente to avoid mushiness after baking. Drain the noodles and transfer them to the prepared baking dish.
  4. Combine Beef with Noodles: Spoon the cooked beef and onion mixture over the noodles in the baking dish. Toss gently to combine and spread into an even layer.
  5. Prepare Sauce and Assemble: In a medium bowl or measuring pitcher, whisk together the tomato sauce, cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and half & half until smooth. Pour this creamy sauce evenly over the noodles and beef in the baking dish. Gently jiggle the pan to distribute the sauce evenly. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
  6. Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes until the top is golden brown, crispy, and edges are bubbly. Remove from oven, optionally garnish with chopped parsley, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Make sure to cook the noodles just until al dente to prevent overcooking during baking.
  • Using half & half adds richness, but whole milk can be substituted for a lighter version.
  • Parmesan cheese topping adds a crispy, savory finish—feel free to increase or decrease amount according to preference.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For added flavor, sprinkle some freshly ground black pepper or red pepper flakes before baking.
