Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 medium yellow onions, diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Special Sauce

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp vinegar
  • Pinch garlic powder (optional)
  • Pinch onion powder (optional)

Fries and Toppings

  • 26-32 oz homemade french fries or frozen fries
  • 6 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter and Cook Onions: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the diced onions. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper, then stir to combine. Cook the onions for 35-40 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until they are softened, caramelized, and have developed a rich brown color.
  2. Prepare the Special Sauce: While the onions cook, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, mustard, vinegar, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl until smooth and well combined.
  3. Cook the Fries: Prepare the fries according to package directions or your homemade recipe until they are hot and crispy.
  4. Top Fries with Cheese: Arrange the cooked fries on a baking sheet. Lay the American cheese slices evenly over the fries. Place the sheet pan into a warm oven briefly until the cheese melts.
  5. Add Onions and Sauce: Once the cheese has melted, top the fries with the caramelized onions. Drizzle the prepared special sauce evenly over the top. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh homemade fries, but frozen fries can be used for convenience.
  • Stir the onions frequently to prevent burning and ensure even caramelization.
  • The special sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Adjust seasoning in the sauce to taste, adding more mustard or vinegar if you prefer a tangier flavor.
  • Use a broiler or oven to melt the cheese quickly without overcooking the fries.
