This Apple Blackberry Crumble is a delightful dessert featuring a sweet and tangy fruit filling topped with a buttery oat and brown sugar crumble. Perfectly baked until golden and bubbling, it's a comforting treat that highlights seasonal fruits in a simple yet delicious way.

Ingredients

For the Crumble Topping

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

For the Fruit Filling

  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 3 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into half inch slices (about 3-4 apples)
  • 3 cups blackberries
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (191°C) to prepare for baking the crumble. This ensures the oven is at the perfect temperature for even cooking.
  2. Make the crumble topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, and 2/3 cup light brown sugar. Add the melted butter and stir until the mixture resembles coarse meal, forming the crumbly texture that will top the fruit filling.
  3. Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, mix together the 1/2 cup light brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and sea salt. Add the sliced apples, blackberries, melted butter, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Toss everything gently to evenly coat the fruit with the spice and sugar mixture.
  4. Assemble the crumble: Spread the fruit filling evenly in an 8x12 inch baking dish or a 10 inch cast iron skillet. Evenly sprinkle the prepared crumb topping over the fruit filling to cover it thoroughly.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the fruit mixture is bubbling. This indicates the filling is cooked through and the crumble is ready.
  6. Cool and serve: Remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to thicken slightly for the best texture and flavor experience.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a perfect balance of sweet and tart in the filling.
  • Make sure to evenly coat the fruit in the sugar and cornstarch mixture to prevent a runny filling.
  • The crumble topping can be mixed until it just comes together; overmixing can make it dense.
  • Letting the crumble cool slightly improves serving texture and helps it set.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgence.
