These Carne Asada Tacos are a vibrant and flavorful Mexican street food favorite, featuring tender, juicy steak cubes served on warm tortillas with diced red onions, crumbled cotija cheese, and fresh cilantro. A quick lime juice squeeze adds a bright finish, perfect for a satisfying meal in just minutes.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 pound carne asada steak, cut into 1-inch cubes (from 1/2 recipe)

Toppings

  • 1/2 cup red onions, diced
  • 1/2 cup cotija cheese or feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped

Others

  • 6 (8-inch) soft tortillas, corn or flour
  • Lime wedges, for squeezing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat Tortillas: Warm the tortillas one at a time in an ungreased cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, cooking each side for about 30 seconds. Alternatively, you can place the tortillas directly on a gas burner for a few seconds to achieve char marks on the edges.
  2. Assemble Tacos: Evenly distribute the cubed carne asada among the tortillas. Top each with diced red onions, crumbled cotija cheese, and chopped fresh cilantro. For extra flavor, add a squeeze of lime juice before serving.

Notes

  • Use either corn or flour tortillas according to preference.
  • If cotija cheese is unavailable, feta cheese is a suitable substitute.
  • Heating tortillas directly on a gas flame imparts a smoky char that enhances flavor.
  • These tacos are best enjoyed immediately after assembling for optimal taste and texture.
