Classic French Toast is a delightful breakfast treat made by soaking brioche bread slices in a cinnamon-spiced egg and milk mixture, then pan-cooked to a golden brown. Served warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh berries, it's a comforting and flavorful way to start your day.

Ingredients

For the French Toast:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 slices Brioche bread
  • Unsalted butter, for cooking

For Serving (Optional):

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Cooking Surface: If using an electric griddle, preheat it to 350 degrees F. Alternatively, you can use a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a shallow pan or pie plate, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, half of the cinnamon (3/4 teaspoon), and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  3. Dip the Bread Slices: Dip each side of the brioche bread slices into the egg mixture. After dipping half of the bread slices, add the remaining 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon to the egg mixture and whisk again to ensure even cinnamon distribution for all slices.
  4. Cook the French Toast: Melt a small amount of unsalted butter on the preheated griddle or skillet. Place the dipped bread slices on the cooking surface and cook each side until golden brown, approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Serve: Serve the French toast warm, topped with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh berries if desired.

Notes

  • Use thick slices of brioche or challah bread for best results as they soak up the egg mixture without falling apart.
  • Adjust cinnamon to taste or substitute with nutmeg for a different flavor.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute whole milk with almond or oat milk and use a plant-based butter alternative.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in a low oven (200°F) while finishing the rest.
  • Additional toppings like whipped cream or nuts add extra texture and flavor.
