Crispy and melty fried mozzarella cheese coated with a crunchy double layer of panko breadcrumbs, perfect as a quick appetizer or snack. This easy pan-fried recipe creates a golden brown exterior while keeping the cheese delightfully gooey inside.

Ingredients

Mozzarella Cheese

  • 4 thin slices mozzarella cheese (not fresh)

Breading

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs

Cooking

  • Vegetable or avocado oil, for pan-frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cheese stack: Brush one side of one slice of mozzarella cheese with water then stack a second slice on top. Repeat brushing and stacking until all four slices are sealed together, ensuring they stick to prevent cheese from melting out during frying.
  2. Set up breading stations: Place the flour in a shallow bowl. In a second shallow bowl, whisk the eggs until smooth. Add the panko breadcrumbs to a third shallow bowl.
  3. First coating: Dredge the cheese stack in the flour, coating it evenly on all sides, then shake off any excess flour thoroughly.
  4. Egg dip: Dip the floured cheese stack into the beaten eggs, letting excess drip off.
  5. First breadcrumb coat: Coat the egg-covered cheese with panko breadcrumbs completely. For extra crunch, repeat the egg dip and breadcrumb coating a second time to create a double layer.
  6. Heat the oil: Pour about 1/2 inch of vegetable or avocado oil into a skillet and heat over medium heat. Test oil readiness by dropping a breadcrumb in; it should sizzle immediately.
  7. Pan-fry the cheese: Carefully place the breaded cheese stack in the hot oil. Fry on one side until golden brown, about 1 minute, then flip and fry the other side for an additional minute.
  8. Drain and season: Using a spatula, transfer the fried mozzarella to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Immediately sprinkle with salt to enhance flavor.
  9. Serve: Serve the crispy fried mozzarella immediately with your favorite toppings or dipping sauces for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use thin slices of non-fresh mozzarella for best melting without excess moisture.
  • Double coating with egg and breadcrumbs ensures a thick, crunchy crust.
  • Maintain medium heat to avoid burning the coating before cheese melts.
  • Serve immediately after frying for optimal cheesiness and crispiness.
  • Try serving with marinara sauce, ranch, or a spicy aioli for dipping.
