This baked salmon recipe offers a simple yet flavorful way to prepare tender, moist salmon fillets. The salmon is topped with a garlic butter and lemon juice mixture, then baked until it flakes perfectly. It’s an easy, healthy dish ideal for a nutritious weeknight dinner or special occasion.

Ingredients

Salmon

  • 1 1/2 - 2 lbs salmon fillet (or about six 4 oz portions)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Garlic Butter Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • Fresh chopped parsley and lemon slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rest salmon: Set the salmon on the counter and allow it to come to room temperature for 20-30 minutes. Pat dry with paper towels. You can cut a large salmon fillet into smaller 3-4 oz portions or leave it whole.
  2. Prepare baking tray: Line a sheet pan or baking tray with aluminum foil and lightly spray with non-stick cooking spray. Place the salmon fillet skin side down on the foil.
  3. Make garlic butter mixture: Melt the butter and stir in the minced garlic and lemon juice. Spoon this garlic butter over the flesh side of the salmon. Optionally, you can enclose the salmon in foil to keep it moist while baking.
  4. Bake the salmon: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (204 degrees C). Bake the salmon for 12-15 minutes, depending on the thickness and desired doneness. USDA recommends cooking to an internal temperature of 145°F, but for medium rare to medium, remove the salmon around 120-130°F as it will continue cooking after being removed. To check doneness, gently pull back on the thickest part with a fork; the salmon should flake easily.
  5. Garnish and serve: Once baked, garnish with fresh chopped parsley and lemon slices if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy your perfectly baked salmon.

Notes

  • Allowing the salmon to come to room temperature before baking helps it cook evenly.
  • Wrapping the salmon in foil creates a moist cooking environment and prevents it from drying out.
  • Adjust baking time depending on the thickness of your salmon fillet.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the salmon is cooked to your preferred doneness.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed vegetables, rice, or a fresh salad.
