A simple and classic recipe for homemade garlic bread featuring a crispy toasted French bread loaf generously spread with a flavorful garlic butter mixture and optionally topped with Parmesan cheese. Perfect as a side for pasta dishes or as a tasty appetizer.

Ingredients

Garlic Butter Mixture

  • ½ cup salted butter (softened)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 to 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Bread

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (204°C) to prepare for baking the garlic bread.
  2. Prepare garlic butter mixture: In a small bowl, thoroughly combine the softened salted butter, olive oil, minced garlic, and chopped fresh parsley until the ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Slice the bread: Using a serrated knife, carefully cut the French bread loaf in half lengthwise to create two even halves ready for spreading.
  4. Spread the mixture and add cheese: Generously spread the garlic butter mixture onto the cut sides of the bread halves. If desired, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the buttered surface for extra flavor.
  5. Arrange and bake: Place the bread halves cut side up on a rimmed baking sheet to catch any drips and bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and toasted to your preference.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven, slice into serving pieces, and enjoy your delicious homemade garlic bread while warm.

Notes

  • For a milder garlic flavor, you can substitute garlic powder or roasted garlic for fresh garlic cloves.
  • Use fresh parsley for a bright, fresh flavor; dried parsley can be used but reduce quantity to about 1 teaspoon.
  • To make the bread extra crispy, you can broil it for the last 1-2 minutes, but watch closely to avoid burning.
  • This recipe can be customized by adding herbs like oregano or basil to the butter mixture.
  • Leftover garlic bread can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in a toaster oven or oven to restore crispness.
