Perfect for a fast and satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 500g / 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts (2 pieces)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup flour

Sauce

  • 3 1/2 tbsp (50g) unsalted butter (reserve about 1 tsp for garlic)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar or other clear vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp light or all-purpose soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup honey (or maple syrup)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken: Slice each chicken breast horizontally to create four thin chicken steaks. Season both sides with salt and pepper evenly.
  2. Flour coating: Place flour in a shallow dish. Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour to coat all sides, then shake off any excess flour.
  3. Melt butter and sear chicken: In a large skillet, melt most of the butter (holding back about 1 teaspoon) over high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on one side until golden brown.
  4. Flip chicken: Turn the chicken over and cook the other side for 1 minute to get a light crust.
  5. Adjust heat: Reduce heat slightly to medium-high to avoid burning while finishing the sauce.
  6. Add garlic and remaining butter: Create space in the pan and add the minced garlic along with the reserved teaspoon of butter. Stir quickly as the butter melts to release the garlic’s aroma without burning it.
  7. Build the sauce: Pour in apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Stir or gently shake the pan to mix the ingredients well. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 1 minute until slightly thickened.
  8. Coat chicken with sauce: Turn the chicken pieces to coat them evenly in the honey garlic sauce. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of water and stir to loosen it.
  9. Serve: Remove skillet from heat immediately. Plate the chicken and drizzle any remaining sauce from the pan over the top for extra flavor.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, replace all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend or cornstarch.
  • Use maple syrup as a substitute for honey to vary the flavor and make it vegan if butter and chicken are swapped.
  • Adjust the sweetness and acidity by varying honey and vinegar amounts according to taste.
  • Cook times may vary depending on chicken thickness; always ensure chicken is cooked through with no pink inside.
