Delight in the natural sweetness of fresh figs enhanced by a touch of cold butter and honey, roasted to perfection and served warm over creamy vanilla ice cream. This quick and easy recipe brings out the rich caramel flavors of figs through gentle oven roasting, making an elegant dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Figs

  • 12 Fresh Figs
  • 6 teaspoons (approximately 3 tablespoons) Cold Butter (½ teaspoon per fig)
  • 12 teaspoons (approximately 4 tablespoons) Honey (1 teaspoon per fig)

To Serve

  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Optional Garnishes: Nuts, Lemon Zest, or Spices

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking dish or line it with parchment paper to prepare for roasting the figs.
  2. Prepare the Figs: Rinse the fresh figs under cool water and gently pat them dry with a towel. Trim off the stems from the tops. Using a sharp knife, make a cross-cut on the top of each fig, taking care not to cut all the way through to the bottom so the figs remain intact when they open during roasting.
  3. Arrange the Figs: Place the figs stem side up in the prepared baking dish, spacing them slightly apart to allow even roasting.
  4. Add Butter: Cut cold butter into ½ teaspoon-sized pieces. Carefully insert one piece of butter into the center of the cross-cut of each fig, ensuring the figs do not split apart.
  5. Drizzle Honey: Spoon about 1 teaspoon of honey over each fig, allowing it to coat the tops for a sweet glaze as they roast.
  6. Bake the Figs: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and roast the figs for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the figs open slightly and become tender and caramelized.
  7. Serve Warm: Remove the roasted figs from the oven. Spoon two warm figs over a serving of vanilla ice cream. Drizzle with the caramelized butter and honey syrup from the baking dish. Garnish with optional nuts, lemon zest, or spices for added flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use ripe but firm figs for best results; overripe figs can become too soft during roasting.
  • Cold butter helps create a silky syrup as it melts, enhancing the figs’ natural sweetness.
  • Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm spice note.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the figs warm and the ice cream slightly melting into the caramelized sauce.
