These Puff Pastry Jam Tarts are delightful bite-sized treats made with flaky puff pastry filled with your favorite jam. Perfect for breakfast, tea time, or a simple dessert, these tarts combine easy preparation with a buttery, golden crust and sweet, fruity center. The recipe requires minimal ingredients and offers a crisp, elegant pastry that’s sure to impress.

Ingredients

For the Puff Pastry Jam Tarts

  • 1 square puff pastry sheet, just barely thawed
  • ½ cup jam (any flavour)
  • 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon of milk or water
  • 2 teaspoons icing sugar (powdered sugar) for dusting

Instructions

  1. Slice Puff Pastry: Keeping the sheet of puff pastry dough on its plastic or a chopping board, slice the square into 9 equal smaller squares carefully.
  2. Cut Center Circles: Use a 2-inch circle cookie cutter and press it down in the middle of each square, cutting all the way through. Do not remove the cut center piece; simply press it down gently as you lift the cutter away.
  3. Prick and Freeze: Use a fork to prick holes over the center circle of each square. Freeze the squares for 30 minutes to ensure they’re solid, which helps the pastry puff better in the oven. They can be refrigerated or frozen overnight if desired.
  4. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan) or 395°F. Line a large baking sheet with baking paper to prevent sticking.
  5. Prepare and Arrange: Transfer the frozen puff pastry squares to the baking sheet, placing them at least 1 inch apart. Brush the egg wash around the edges of each square, trying to avoid the center circle but a little overlap is okay.
  6. Add Jam: Spoon 2 teaspoons of your choice of jam into the center section of each pastry square.
  7. Bake: Bake the tarts in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until the edges turn a deep golden brown. Handle with care as the jam will be very hot.
  8. Finishing Touches: If any tarts appear patchy, add a touch more jam. Allow the tarts to cool completely before serving. Dust the tops lightly with icing sugar.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Serve these delicious jam tarts as a snack or dessert. Don’t forget to share your experience and rating if you try the recipe!

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is well chilled before baking to get the best puff.
  • You can prepare the tart bases in advance and freeze them, then bake directly from frozen.
  • Use your favorite jam flavor, such as strawberry, raspberry, apricot, or blueberry.
  • Be cautious when eating freshly baked tarts, as the jam filling will be very hot.
  • For an extra touch, you can glaze the edges with a little apricot jam after baking for shine.
