Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Add-ins

  • ¾ cup Red, White, and Blue M&M's
  • ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • ⅓ cup patriotic sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350º F (175º C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature for baking your cookie bars evenly.
  2. Prepare Pan: Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easy.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Set aside.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to cream the softened butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar on medium-high speed until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  5. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time along with the vanilla extract and salt. Mix just until the eggs are incorporated to avoid overmixing.
  6. Combine with Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Stir with a rubber spatula until you get a thick cookie dough consistency, making sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl to combine everything thoroughly.
  7. Fold in Mix-ins: Gently fold in the semisweet chocolate chips, Red, White, and Blue M&M's, and patriotic sprinkles, ensuring even distribution throughout the dough.
  8. Press Dough into Pan: Transfer the dough into the prepared baking pan and press it down evenly with your hands or a spatula. Sprinkle additional M&M's and sprinkles on top for an extra colorful finish.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes. Test doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center—if it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs, the bars are ready.
  10. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the bars cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, cut into 12 squares and serve. Enjoy your festive cookie bars!

Notes

  • For softer bars, slightly underbake and allow cooling to set the texture.
  • You can substitute M&M's with any favorite candy-coated chocolates or add nuts for extra crunch.
  • Ensure butter is softened at room temperature for easier creaming with sugars.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • For taller bars, use a smaller pan, adjusting baking time accordingly.
