This Spooky Bark Recipe is a fun and festive treat perfect for Halloween celebrations. Made with a base of melted semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, it’s topped with a colorful and delicious mix of candy corn, Halloween sprinkles, various candies, nuts, dried fruits, pretzels, and more. The bark hardens to a crunchy, sweet delight that’s easy to break into pieces and share at parties or enjoy as a seasonal snack.

Ingredients

Chocolate Base

  • 1 pound semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate bars)

Toppings

  • 1/3 cup candy corn
  • 1/4 cup Halloween sprinkles and/or candy eyeballs
  • Pretzels, broken
  • Leftover Halloween candy (e.g., M&Ms, Reese’s pieces, candy bars - chopped bite-sized)
  • Nuts (such as almonds, peanuts, or shelled pistachios)
  • Dried fruit (e.g., cranberries or chopped dried apricots)
  • Broken up potato chips
  • Oreo cookies (especially Halloween-themed, chopped)
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Gummy worms
  • Granola
  • Broken up graham crackers
  • Flaked or shredded coconut
  • Roasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Baking Pan: Line a rimmed baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easy.
  2. Melt Chocolate: Place the chocolate in a double boiler and heat gently, stirring frequently until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Alternatively, you can melt it carefully in a microwave in short bursts (see notes).
  3. Spread Chocolate: Pour the melted chocolate onto the prepared baking pan. Using a knife or offset spatula, spread it evenly until the thickness is between 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
  4. Add Toppings: Evenly sprinkle candy corn, Halloween sprinkles, candy eyeballs, and your assorted toppings of choice over the melted chocolate surface.
  5. Harden the Bark: Allow the chocolate bark to set at room temperature for at least 2 hours or until very firm. Alternatively, place it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes until firm enough to break into pieces.
  6. Serve or Store: Once hardened, break the bark into pieces and serve immediately or store in an airtight container in a cool place to keep fresh.

Notes

  • For microwave melting, heat chocolate in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well between each until smooth.
  • Make sure not to overheat chocolate as it can seize or burn easily.
  • Customize toppings based on available candy and preferences for an extra fun and personalized bark.
  • Store bark away from heat to prevent melting and moisture to maintain crispness.
